What is Rent Control in San Francisco? California Landlord Advice
Today we’re talking about rent control properties in the city and county of San Francisco. Specifically, when we talk about rent control we are talking about rent increases and whether they are permitted. We get a lot of phone calls from property owners who are unclear about whether their property falls under the local rent control laws. These general rules will help you avoid some of the confusion that comes with rent control.
- If you have a single family house or a condominium unit that was issued a certificate of occupancy on or before June 13, 1979, there is no rent increase regulation on that property.
- If you have a multi-unit residence that was issued a certificate of occupancy on or before June 13, 1979, there is rent control regulation regarding increases. The amount that you are permitted to increase your rent is published every year by the San Francisco Rent Board.
- If you have a single family house or a condominium as well as a multi-unit building that was issued a certificate of occupancy after June 13, then there is no rent control on your property.
